Is a single speed / fixed gear cycle handy if I have a good amount of hills in my travels?

Im trying to find a good cycle to start today because my bike is junk. I was looking at certain speeds and simple things, but im thinking that because I have in my hilly commute it is not very practical. So it is easy to change the transmission on these bikes?

If you live in a hilly area, I recommend certainly not a fixed-gear bike for your commute. A fixed gear bike has no freewheel, so you should always be pedaling, so these gears often are not equipped with brakes, which can be dangerous, especially if you're going down hills in traffic. A "singlespeed" bike is not the same as the gear "fixed", although it is true that a fixed gear has one speed, one has a singlespeed freewheel and brakes. I recommend buying a bike suitable for travel in your area. It could be as simple as a flat bar road bike or fitness bike, or as complicated as a Breezer Uptown, which is equipped with racks, lights, fenders, etc.
